Different rules may apply in each jurisdiction that must be followed. Backflow prevention systems are mechanical and contain metal, plastic, and rubber components that must be inspected to ensure they are in good working order. These components are subject to failure because they are always under water pressure. They will require replacing or fixing. In some cases, a complete replacement will be required to maintain the water system’s integrity.

Backflow is a term in for an unwanted flow of water in the reverse direction.

When potable water supplies are contaminated by bad water, there may be a major health danger. A toilet flush cistern and its water supply need to be separated from the toilet bowl in the most straightforward scenario. For this reason, backflow prevention devices and several other safeguards are required by building rules.

Water is typically kept under substantial pressure in water distribution systems so that it can flow from the faucet, shower, or other fixture.

When a water main explodes, pipes freeze, or the water system experiences unexpectedly high demand, water pressure may fail or be lowered (for example, when several fire hydrants are opened). Reduced pipe pressure could make it possible for polluted water to be brought into the system from the soil, a storage facility, or other sources.

Backflow occurs for one of two reasons, either back pressure or back siphonage.

1

Back pressure occurs when the system pressure is higher than the supply pressure, meaning the system pressure has been raised in some way. The pressure may rise as a result of thermal expansion in unvented heating systems.

2

Back siphonage happens when the supply pressure is less than the system pressure. This may happen if a supply is cut off or depleted.
