Emergency Lights

Ensuring the protection of life and property is our mission

These devices serve only to illuminate the pathways and warning signs so that people can find the safest route to safety.

A building’s overall fire safety includes emergency exit illumination and exit signage, both of which are crucial components. These technologies are intended to illuminate the exit during an emergency like fire, protecting the building’s occupants. All areas of the structure must have dependable emergency lighting and readily visible evacuation signs.

Maintaining emergency and exit lighting can be vital for helping occupants navigate safely and exit the building.

OSHA and NFPA mandate that emergency lighting systems be evaluated bimonthly and annually to ensure the building’s general safety. To maintain the safety of the building’s residents, routine maintenance should be carried out by qualified people using the proper tools, equipment, and replacement parts.

The certified fire and life safety specialists at Chief Facility Defense can install, check, and maintain the emergency lighting systems in your facilities. This will guarantee that you stay clear of any potential code breaches and expensive fines.

Regardless of the size or type of building, you are required to perform:

  • 30-second tests every 30 days to ensure required illumination
  • 90-minute tests every year to simulate a long-term emergency

In order to simulate an actual emergency, the emergency lighting test entails turning off the building’s emergency lighting units. All emergency lighting must be completely functional while the test is being run.

The yearly and monthly tests require the keeping of written records. Any additional follow-up maintenance records must be preserved for OSHA or other AHJ inspections in the future (Authority Having Jurisdiction).

  • Ensure emergency lighting is installed according to code
  • Inspect for physical damage
  • Conduct a 30-second push test switch
  • Check for illuminated lamps and ensure they are properly aimed
  • Maintain monthly log for inspection by the AHJ
  • Do a complete examination of the unit
  • Complete the required 90-minute test of the battery and lighting system
  • Check the condition, voltage, and the manufacturer date of the battery
  • Check AC/DC lamps or bulbs for damage and proper operation
  • Ensure the charging unit is operational and functioning properly
  • Once the yearly test is complete, apply an emergency lighting test label to each light.
